For our topic of discussion today, we would be introducing one of the most popular ophthalmic instruments in the eye care industry to you. Yes we know that you are not the one going to use it and we don't expect you to have all the details whatsoever however we believe that knowledge of the things used for your care would go a great deal to helping you be at ease when you visit your optometrist.

The Ophthalmoscope

As mentioned this instrument is one of the most popular once when you come to the eye care industry. Ideally every optometrist owns one, you can call it the lifetime partner of an optometrist, well it wouldn't replace your wife or husband but this is definitely the OD's friend.

So the Ophthalmoscope uses the principles of optics to function and with it the Optometrist is able to visualize the inner parts of your eye to see your retina and the vitreous. By altering the powers a skilled Optometrist may use it to also observe the anterior segment although it is preferred to use the slit-lamp in this case.

The Ophthalmoscope has both convex and concave lenses which depending on what your Optometrist wants to see may be used. They also allow focus on particular parts within the eye and also acts as a refractive error correction for Optometrist who has. It also has the blue filter and the red free filter for visualization of macular conditions and ulcers etc.

In the Operation of the Ophthalmoscope, your Optometrist will shine light into your eye, this may be a bit uncomfortable and for some people even intolerable but this is warranted for your care so hold on just a little longer. You would be asked to look at a particular object or just stare straight ahead, in that case you can find an object for your own focus but do not look into the light from the instrument unless otherwise instructed to do so. When these are followed everything will be done swiftly and quite quickly.

Conditions Diagnosed by the Ophthalmoscope

Some common conditions that your Optometrist may diagnose with the help of the Ophthalmoscope include;

  • Retinitis

  • Uveitis (Posterior, Iridocyclitis, Pan)

  • Macular Degeneration

  • Macular Hole

  • Glaucoma

  • Cataract

Some conditions may require addition tests, whereas others may need verification with other instruments however the things the ophthalmoscope can do is quite extensive when it comes to the eye. Perhaps one of the reasons why every OD has one or must have one.

So the next time you visit the eye clinic and you see this instrument don't be afraid of it, it is harmless and does a great job at helping with your diagnosis also. Just follow the instructions your OD gives you and you should be done with it in no time. Everything will work out nicely.
